چکیده

In this paper, impact of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on the bit error rate (BER) performance of direct sequence optical code division multiple access with in-line optical amplifiers is analytically investigated. Intensity modulation direct detection technique is employed in optical correlator receiver. Optical orthogonal codes are used as address sequence. The system BER performance is determined in presence of PMD and different noises induced from receiver, optical amplifiers, and multiple access interference. The power penalty suffered by the system is evaluated at BER of 10. It is found that the BER performance of the proposed system degraded more at high chip rate, chirp parameter and long fiber length due to the effect of PMD. Further, the BER performance of the proposed system is studied in presence of PMD compensation with frequency advanced higher order PMD vectors. The results demonstrate that the system BER performance is improved significantly for a particular fiber length and third-order PMD compensation technique shows better performance compared to first-, and second-order compensations.

Periodic and Quasi-Periodic Compensation Strategies of Extreme Outages caused by Polarization Mode Dispersion and Amplifier Noise

Effect of birefringent disorder on the Bit Error Rate (BER) in an optical fiber telecommunication system subject to amplifier noise may lead to extreme outages, related to anomalously large values of BER. We analyze the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of BER for various strategies of Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensation. A compensation method is proposed that is capable of mo...

Suppression of Four Wave Mixing Based on the Pairing Combinations of Differently Linear-Polarized Optical Signals in WDM System

Data transmission in optical systems and increased transmission distance capacity benefit by using optical amplification wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. The combination of four waves (FWM) is a non-linear effect in the wavelength division multiplex (WDM), when more than two wavelengths of light in a fiber launch will occur. FWM amount depends on the channel, the channel spaci...

Performance Limitations of an Optical IM-DD Transmission System Due to Polarization Mode Dispersion

An analytical approach is presented to evaluate the impact of polarization mode dispersion on the average bit error rate (BER) performance of a intensity modulated direct detection (IM-DD) optical transmission system considering Maxwellian distribution for the differential group delay (DGD). The results show that the performance of an IM-DD system suffers power penalty of 0.27 dB, 0.45 dB and 2...
